Ann Hui is a Toronto-based freelance writer and a Master of Journalism candidate at Ryerson University.
From a young age in her hometown of Vancouver, her parents had her two sisters and herself enrolled in every extracurricular activity and class imaginable: piano, swimming, Chinese school, etc.
This turned out to be a blessing and a curse.
A curse, because every Saturday morning was spent reciting hopelessly outdated Chinese poetry while her friends slept in and watched cartoons.
A blessing, because this resulted in her first "reporting" job, updating her sisters on what had happened on all their favorite TV shows (Melrose Place and the like) while they'd been away at ballet class. Sadly, she was deemed "too ungraceful" for dance.
Many years later, she was convinced that journalism was what she wanted to do. So, a month after completing her BA in political sciences from the University of British Columbia, she packed her life up into two suitcases and moved to Toronto.
Wanting to experience the world outside of just journalism, she chose first to explore other areas such as travel, politics and broadcasting, in hopes of later writing about these experiences.
As a result, she has a diverse background which includes working as a legislative reporter at Queen’s Park, a flight attendant working various domestic and international routes, as well as an intern at MTV Canada. She is also a classically-trained pianist who is fluent in three languages.
Along the way, Ann has freelanced for a variety of different magazines and newspapers, including the National Post, Chart Magazine, The Ubyssey and dose.ca. |
